Play Reentry.
Learn Reality.
ViRSE (Virtual Reentry Simulation Experience) is an immersive game for incarcerated individuals to play on prison-issued tablets or other approved devices. Through interactive gameplay, players create a personalized character that reflects their own background, circumstances, and goals, then navigate a virtual environment modeled on the real challenges of life after release.
As they play, users make decisions, encounter obstacles, and explore opportunities similar to those they are likely to face in the community. The game provides guidance along the way, highlighting constructive choices, skill-building activities, and steps that can strengthen their prospects while still incarcerated.
As their release date approaches, ViRSE helps bridge the gap between the virtual and real world by introducing players to relevant services, supports, and pathways they can begin engaging with before they return home.

Our Guiding Principles

Built to be fun and to engage players through immersive, choice-driven gameplay.

Built with strong privacy and security safeguards to protect all player data and personal information.

Always free for people who are incarcerated and their families.

Focus Group Feedback about ViRSE
CoreCivic Reentry Center, Raleigh, NC
"Regardless of our journeys, our one commonality is where we go from here."
"This game is all about decision making and practicing making choices."
"They will like this inside. Everyone in prison will play this. Even the lifers; it will give them hope."
"ViRSE will amplify human support for reentry—providing daily, adaptive, skills-based reinforcement that builds the cognitive foundations of long-term behavioral change."

"The ability to shape a character that reflects one’s own story, test choices without real-world consequences, and receive guidance along the way mirrors what effective reentry support should look like: practical, affirming, and forward-looking."
